As I’m certain you’ve heard way too much about in the last few days, today is the apparent end of the world, where all non-believers will be stuck on Earth to die from earthquakes, violence and fire while the most devoted Christians will go to heaven and watch us suffer in excruciating pain. Now, in the UK, although it is still a long ways off being 6pm, and so I don’t know whether to find a shotgun to defend myself from an imminent zombie hoard, many of our Australian and New Zealand friends have notified that the Rapture has not interrupted their lives thus far, and is pretty non-existent. Brilliant for the billions of athiests/non-believers/Muslims/Hindus/Sikhs/Buddhists/Jews and for the future of the world as we know it, but not for those perfect, special Christians. “Cheer up, it’s not the end of the world” has never been more ironic nor appropriate since 1994, or the hundreds of other prophecies since that date that have all fallen flat on their face.

Before I get into the main part of the article, let me highlight that I am not religious, and probably do come under the atheist/agnostic, but regardless am not assertive of my faith and do not go around disregarding God, as there is no proof either way of his existence. So remember during this article that I am not biased in any way and you do not need to go hating on me; we’ve all had enough atheist banter about this event that you can roll-around-on-the-floor laughing at after you’ve read this article.

I am disgusted, ashamed and feel a certain amount of hatred at these Christians who have been proclaiming the apocalypse recently, because they seem to have so little foresight onto their actions. Whether it is possible to predict when Rapture will occur we will not know (Matthew 24:36 — “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”). Yet let’s think back to the drama surrounding the LHC and its start a few years back. The media blew a story out of proportion that a black hole could be created and the world would be sucked in and we would all die, when this was never going to happen, as asserted by the people in charge of the project. Yet the night before a girl committed suicide because they couldn’t live up to this potential sudden death. While you can wonder why she would prefer to die slowly due to drinking a pesticide instead of being vaporised instantly, the bottom line is that due to false rumours, a girl has died and their family has lost a member and has to pick up the pieces. I fear the same will happen as a result of this event – people may commit suicide in fear/disappointment of the ‘apocalypse’ or its no-show, and so some of these ‘loving’, ‘perfect’ Christians have essentially killed someone while scaremongering. There are no ifs or buts about it.

Secondly, there have been stories of people who are really serious about this and families who really do think today is their last day on this earth. And they’ve been telling their children they will not be going to heaven with them. Now, how people that are stupid enough to believe this prophecy are allowed to have children I do not know, but disowning them because they think they are not perfect while they themselves are? What kind of living parent are they? Do they know what kind of psychological trauma the children could be going through because of this selfish, disgusting train of thought. These people deserve to burn in hell, not go to heaven, and part of me wishes that the date will really be the beginning of the end so they can be disappointed and suffer God’s imminent wrath. I don’t know how any Christian can bear to go to heaven, without their family, and watch everyone suffer and die. Heaven will be a sick, twisted place if this is so, not the paradise God proclaims in the Bible. I could go and rant on about how religion is just praising some egotistical God, full of uppity morons who do no good to society apart from worship a false deity, but that’s for another argument.

Forget about world destruction and everyone you know descending into oblivion – the only worries that we should have from today include deaths and moral trauma, which is obviously nothing to worry about [/sarcasm]. Seriously, at the end of the day, everyone, no matter what religion should find it hard to emphasize with the disappointed people, because out of everyone, they should be the ones fighting it out in a torrent of fire and destruction due to how selfish and cruel they really are. Christianity has hit another nail in its coffin today, and it’s only got it’s most dedicated members to blame.
